Witten: In or out?

Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys has a broken rib.  It hurts to breathe. He has trouble sleeping.  But he wants to play this weekend against the defending Super Bowl champs, the New York Giants.  So far, the doctors have said a resounding NO, but Witten himself says that it is ultimately a game-time decision by him and the trainers as to whether he plays.  Witten has had a good season thusfar.  He is the NFC leader in catches made, and several of those catches have been very important to his team.  In the home opener, he made catches that set up a field goal and scored the winning touchdown, all with an injured shoulder.  To a Cowboys team already riddled with injuries (see: Tony Romo), his loss is yet another blow to what was supposed to be a big season. But he wants to play!

Preview: Titans vs. Colts

The Tennessee Titans take on the Indianapolis Colts tonight in an exciting Monday Night Football game.  Usually, the Colts are the big team, scoring lots of points each game and using a very strong offensive machine to beat anyone else into submission.  This time, though, the Colts are 3-3 on the season and having trouble getting their offense moving in any meaningful way.  The Titans, on the other hand, are 6-0 this season and are very convincing in that role.  Their winning streak goes back 9 games, into the end of last year.  They score lots of points every game, including a 34-10 trouncing of Kansas City last weekend.  These two teams are perennial rivals, and this year will prove to be especially exciting.  Indy is trying to get over the hump and gain some respect this year, while Tennessee is playing for January!

Daunte Undaunted

Daunte Culpepper seems to be aiming for a return to the NFL.  He retired 49 days ago but yesterday he showed an interest in un-retiring and joining up with a team.  NFL.com blogger Adam Schefter reports that Culpepper has been in contact with the Chiefs, the Packers, and the Titans already.  He claims that his original reason for retiring was because of “the absence of a fair opportunity to compete and play.”  He hopes to join up with a team and play an integral role in the second half of the season.  Before his retirement, Culpepper played for 9 seasons, 7 of them with the Minnesota Vikings and had a total of 142 touchdowns.  It will be interesting to see which team he decides to join and how well he is used there!

Another Bush Out of Office

After Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers, the New Orleans football camp released a statement that star running back Reggie Bush will miss 3-4 weeks as a result of an injury to his left knee. While it is not yet confirmed, it is believed that he tore the meniscus in his knee and will need arthoscopic surgery to correct it. But there is a plus side in all of this for the Saints, while Bush is expected to be sidelined for at least 3 weeks, he may only miss one game. The Saints travel to play against San Diego in Wembley Stadium, London this upcoming Sunday, then they have a bye week. By the time the next game rolls around, Bush may be back to 100%, or if not, at least in game-playing condition. Learn more about his condition at NFL.com.

Cowboys Trading, Suspending, Breaking

 cowboysfootball.jpg

The story of the Dallas this last week can be summed by these three words: Trade, Suspend, Break. In quite a surprising move on their own behalf (as well as the Lions), Dallas acquired Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions earlier this week. Adding in a star receiver like that when they already have one in Terrell Owens is somewhat perplexing, especially when they really need some more defensive strength, considering Pacman Jones’ situation. Defensive back Adam “Pacman” Jones was suspended indefinitely from the team after getting into a little scuffle with his own body guard. However, the biggest change for the Cowboys was when Tony Romo broke his right pinkie last Sunday against the Redskins. His condition is labeled as a game-time decision, but they may have to revert to backup QB Brad Johnson. Find out more Dallas information by visiting the Cowboys website.

Arizona Firm in First

With their surprising victory over the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals have boosted their own morale quite a lot. Between securing themselves a comfortable two game lead in the NFC West over the 49ers and beating one of the league’s best in the Dallas Cowboys, Arizona can now look forward to continued success with the hopes of postseason play. Under the veteran leadership of Kurt Warner, the outlook seems good. Click here to learn more about the Cardinals.

Hitting Hard

Adrian Wilson, the Cardinals safety, will be getting a fine for his hard-hitting open tackle of Trent Edwards. This happened during the Cardinals versus Buffalo Bills game. Wilson took down Edwards and the tackle resulted in a concussion that saw Edwards off the field for the rest of the game. Edwards’ play status is still under review. The NFL is fining Wilson $25,000 dollars and also indicated they will issue more severe fines and penalties should this occur again.

Going for the Record

Matt Prater of the Denver Broncos will be trying to set a league record for a field goal distance. The current record stands at 63 yards. Prater wants to break it and set the record at 70 yards. In his position, being able to kick well is important. Prater is doing very well as a kicker for the Broncos. His stats are nothing to smirk at or ignore. Prater is a really good kicker and he is getting better and closer to breaking the record one kick at a time.

Lane Kiffin out the Door

More firing and hiring taking place at the NFL. This had been one exciting season off the field and. Unwanted coaches are being let go at a record pace. It seems as winning is really becoming a mantra for all the teams. Maybe it’s a good thing; maybe it’s a bad thing. Coaching never really had much job security, especially if the team continually looses. This week it is Lane Kiffin, the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, who go the boot. The decision finally came, over the phone, to have Kiffin let go after many off-season rumors.
