Jackpot

Former Tennessee Titans tackle, Albert Haynesworth, will be headed to the Washington Redskins this season and it’s going to be a great time. He became a free agent right at midnight the other day and immediately got many different offers. Now he’s accepted a deal from Washington for $100 million over the course of 6 years. It’s a better deal than he could have gotten from really anywhere else at this point. The Titans didn’t even try to re-sign him, so that’s where it topped out. It will be interesting to see how they are able to use him, but it’s one of the first major deals to come up this year.

Reports about Warner

The Cardinals want to keep Kurt Warner. That much is obvious. It is also obvious that he wants to stick around. The question is whether the Cards can pony up the money needed to keep him. They have been unable to reach a deal thusfar, and free agency will begin shortly. Will Warner check out some other deals or will he actually stick around? Apparently, the reports are that they will offer him between $10-12 million, but it’s not completely clear that he wants to take it. He clearly wants something closer to 15 million dollars, as he thinks he is a “top five” quarterback, all of whom make that amount of money fairly regularly. Keep your eyes on that.

NFL-Roids

In the firestorm, let’s not forget that the NFL had steroids back in the olden days as well. And there is a survey out that links the NFL steroid users to major post-career injuries. Different tendon and ligament kinds of injuries seem to have caused problems for many retired NFL players from the 40s to the 90, and there seems to be a correlation between the use of steroids and that level of injury. There is also a chance that these injuries will slowly come to light as one gets older, so more information will be very instructive in the future.

Falcons Fly Past Vick

Michael Vick is one of the most diminished characters in the NFL these days. He remains in a lot of trouble due to the dog fighting allegations that are apparently true. After all, he’s been in jail. So now what do the Atlanta Falcons do? They are not as good without Vick as they were with him. But at the same time, they’ve found a decent alternative, and it would be hard to bring this guy back again. So the Falcons have decided that they want to get trade rights to get rid of him finally. Obviously, he wants to come back as soon as he can, possibly at the beginning of the next season. But who will take him? Maybe someone in the CFL?

Great Player Finished

Brett Favre announced his retirement again this week. He has retired several times before, most notably in the spring of 2008, when he was completely decided that he was going to leave the game once and for all. Then he attempted a Green Bay comeback, where he reported for camp, despite the fact that they were getting Aaron Rodgers ready for the position. So he was released to the New York Jets, where he played last season. But it’s kind of sad, because the season didn’t end quite so great there. Favre played well at the beginning, but was injured late in the season, one of the reasons that this retirement looks like it’s more permanent. We don’t think this story is going any further, but you never really know, I guess.

Ribs of Steel

Ben Roethlisberger had broken ribs during the Super Bowl! Can you believe it? He had injured them during the AFC championship game, we knew that much. But during the time leading up to the big game, his coaches came out repeatedly saying that he was completely fine and we need not worry about him being out during the game. Luckily, he didn’t get hit by anything that would have harmed his ribs anymore. And I guess he just played through the pain, not worrying about it all that much.

KC

Kansas City hasn’t made it onto this page in quite awhile. Mostly, this is because they haven’t done much of anything interesting in awhile. Today they named Todd Haley to their head coaching position, hoping to turn around the youngest team in the league, and aiming to send them into a season where they might break .500 if nothing else.  Who is Todd Haley? He was the offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals this season, a team that, while they didn’t win the Super Bowl, were able to do a great job and almost took the Pittsburgh Steelers down. He’s clearly a very talented young coach, so perhaps he can make something out of KC that has been much less than stellar lately.

Holmes=Hero

Santonio Holmes took his team all the way to the championship last night. The Super Bowl is always an exciting game, but at the end of yesterday’s version, it was an amazing matchup. We knew that neither of these teams really give up. And with Kurt Warner behind the ball, it’s hard to imagine how you could really relax. Just witness the touchdown that put them ahead late in the 4th quarter: he found Larry Fitzgerald in the middle for a long touchdown run. But Roethlisberger matched this in his drive as well, when he threw the ball right in the corner where Holmes was waiting, toes still in the endzone. So he could hold on and they took the lead, and kept it.
